Zeiss Milvus 25mm f/1.4

Distortion for Milvus 25/1.4

Distortion is moderate barrel distortion (bowing out), about the same degree as its 25mm f/2 and 25mm f/2.8 predecessors, but of a straightforward barrel type distortion, less visually objectionable than wave-type distortion, though the inflection to pincushion distortion in the 25/2 and 25/2.8 was mild.

Plain barrel distortion as seen here in the 25/1.4 is the easiest type of distortion for the eye to accept, and generally easy to correct during raw conversion or by in-camera lens corrections for those shooting JPEG.

A subtle but significant issue is that by avoiding the need for correction (e.g., plain barrel distortion is not too objectionable), MTF is not degraded by correcting the distortion.
